Jockey Training

In 2013, Darley announced that they would sponsor the Darley Jockey Training Programme, an initiative that works closely with representatives of horse racing in China and provides the opportunity for a group of promising Chinese jockeys to be trained at Newmarket, the home of horseracing.

Each year a number of jockeys are selected to travel to the UK where they spend six weeks at the British Racing School.

Here they learn a number of skills including riding — both on a simulator and on the gallops, together with fitness training, stable management and language training. They also attend a number of lectures where they can gain a broader understanding of riding terminology, race tactics and other theoretical aspects of race riding.

During their time in the UK, they are also introduced to Darley and Dubai via a series of lectures given by Darley’s DITI interns. They also visit Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud and pre-training facilities in Newmarket. Trainees have also previously visited the famous Epsom racecourse to attend the Oaks meeting, Tattersalls Breeze-Up Sale and the National Horseracing Museum.

Jockeys who have previously completed the programme have returned to great success in China and the best of these will return to the UK for further training.
